Helicopter pilot avoids tragedy in theme park crash
A pilot who crash-landed a helicopter at Dreamworld theme park on Australia's Gold Coast, without serious injury to anyone, has been hailed a hero.
When the Bell Jetranger 206 helicopter was forced into an emergency landing by a power failure, the pilot, named as Mutsumi Sato, managed to avoid guests and their cars by landing in an empty part of the carpark. He and the four passengers escaped with only minor injuries.
Helicopter flights are subcontracted out of Dreamworld by James Technology, which will now be conducting an investigation into the crash.
A spokesperson for Dreamworld theme park said: "The safety of our guests and staff is our absolute priority and we are deeply shocked to hear of this incident. Our thoughts are with those on board and the entire team here wish them a full and speedy recovery.
"We understand that the pilot noticed a power failure on decent from a short joy flight and diverted the helicopter to an empty car park to avert a greater danger. We are incredibly grateful for what we are led to believe was a quick and extremely experienced response."
