High performance shooting range for Cardiff
A high performance shooting facility has been unveiled in Cardiff with hopes it will improve Welsh prospects at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and other world-class competitions.
The near £100,000 Sport Wales National Centre includes a 50m six-lane shooting range with the latest laser target equipment.
It means the Welsh shooting team will no longer take monthly trips to Surrey - a 300-mile roundtrip - where they previously trained on a similar facility.
Among those at the opening was 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Dave Phelps, who fired the first shot - a 10 pointer.
He believes the shooting range is the best of its kind in the UK.
Shooting has been designated a Category A sport by Sport Wales as it has the potential to win Wales medals on elite stages.
Chair of the Welsh Target Shooting Federation (WTSF) Martin Watkins hopes the facility will boost the team's medal prospects significantly at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Team Wales has set a target of 25 base and 35 stretch medals in the competition to be held in Glasgow.
