Rich Nelsen named In-Shape CEO as founder Paul Rothbard steps down

By Tom Walker    15 Nov 2016
Paul Rothbard is stepping down as CEO after 25 years in the post

Paul Rothbard, founder of US-based health club operator In-Shape, will step down from his role as CEO on 1 December.

He will be replaced by Rich Nelsen, who joins the business from coffeehouse giant Starbucks.

Nelsen has a strong background in retail and hospitality, including executive roles at Taco Bell and Clark Convenience Stores.

At Starbucks, he presided over the company’s successful expansion in Mid-America, more than tripling the group’s retail footprint in the region.

As part of the succession plan, Rothbard will retain his ownership in the company and take up “an active role” as a director on the board of In-Shape.

An industry veteran, Rothbard began building In-Shape into a brand in 1992, after taking over three loosely-affiliated clubs in Stockton, California.

He unified the brand identity and over the course of 25 years grew the company, which today boasts more than 70 premium health and fitness destinations.

In-Shape has looked to profile itself as a health club with a holistic approach to wellness, offering a wide range of facilities and exercise programmes.

A typical In-Shape club houses a large gym floor with exercise stations and free weights, a number of group fitness spaces, indoor and outdoor pools and sports facilities - such as basketball, tennis and racquetball courts.

Earlier this year, the company signed a deal to introduce the Silver&Fit-banded exercise and healthy ageing programme – offering no-cost or low-cost access to eligible older adults – at more than 50 of its 72 locations throughout California.

"There are three things that I am particularly proud of about my tenure at In-Shape,” Rothbard said.

“We built a successful company and brand; we adopted an innovative strategy when selecting locations for new facilities; and we created a brand which empowers people to make their lives better.”

"Because In-Shape is quite literally in my DNA, my decision to move on is naturally bittersweet. I will remain active as a board member and significant owner, and I look forward to supporting Rich as he leads In-Shape into the future."
