IOC launches course for transitioning Olympic athletes

By Matthew Campelli    21 Nov 2016
A number of athletes competing at Rio 2016 will have retired from their sport after the Games / IOC

A course for retired Olympic athletes looking to take the next step in their careers has been prepared by the world governing body.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has launched the course on its Athlete Learning Gateway.

Athlete Transition – Preparing for Future Success will feature advice and insight from industry experts and former athletes about networking, time management, CV preparation and interview techniques.

Getting athletes prepared for the next part of their lives has become a hot topic, and in the UK the government is on the cusp of publishing a Duty of Care review, which will address elite sportsperson transition as one of its main outcomes.

The learning platform has 13,000 users from 194 countries, and already has 19 courses uploaded for its members. There is also a designated community area for members to interact with each other.

Olympians such as Michael Johnson, Kirsty Coventry, Lawrence Ndlovu and Angela Ruggiero have contributed to the platform’s content.

Dr Amira Najah, an academic contributing to the Learning Gateway, said the platform was a “dynamic space”.

“It is an innovative way to help interested athletes in learning and appropriating knowledge and tools to enhance their performance and future careers,” Najah added.
