ISRM launches Fit for Life programme for over-50s
A fitness programme aimed at the over-50s has been launched online in a move designed to help delay physical decline in older age.
Figures from the Social Trends report from the Office for National Statistics show that only 32 per cent of men and 21 per cent of women aged 55 to 64 take the recommended minimum of 30 minutes exercise most days.
The Institute of Sport and Recreation Management (ISRM) has consequently enlisted the services of Wayne Richardson, a member of the institute and a qualified personal trainer, to design the Fit for Life programme.
The programme recommends that people over 50 should exercise for 20-30 minutes at least five times a week in line with the government’s guidelines. For older adults, a weekly exercise schedule should include at least 30 minutes of weight bearing exercise three days a week either at home, in a gym or as part of an organised class.
“Many of us are still looking for guidance about the right type of exercise to do. This programme gives people a starting point, incorporating a variety of activities, so people can choose something they enjoy and take part in when it suits them,” said chief executive of the ISRM, Ralph Riley.
