More volunteers and young leaders are being trained by Cardiff Council's sports development team, according to latest research.

Sport.Cardiff, which aims to boost grassroots sport development in schools, clubs and communities across the city, launched the Coaching and Workforce Project in April. More than 400 people have participated in the scheme since its launch, with 208 being trained during the last quarter. University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC) is part-funding the scheme.

The project is backed by the Coach and Volunteer Accreditation Scheme to ensure that each participant is able to meet minimum standards for the sector. Cardiff Council executive member for sport, leisure and culture Nigel Howells said: "The volunteers, coaches and teachers who give up their time are a huge factor to the success of the scheme, allowing the programme to continue to grow, enriching the lives of more and more children across the city."
