International sport inspiration launched
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has launched its International Inspiration scheme by investing £9m in supporting sporting projects in its first five developing countries.
The scheme aims to create opportunities for children and young people of all abilities from the world’s most disadvantaged communities to enhance their lives by playing and excelling in sport.
Azerbaijan, Brazil, India, Palau and Zambia are the first to benefit from the UK Sport-led programme, as pilot countries.
Tessa Jowell, Olympics Minister, said: “Part of the success of our 2012 bid was the promise that London would inspire children across the world, and this is one important step toward that ambition.
“Sport is the catalyst for many very positive changes, and this programme aims to harness its power and inspire generations of people in countries around the world.”
Funding is from DFID, UNICEF, the British Council, FA Premier League and DCMS.
