Glasgow in the running to host 2019 European Athletics Indoor Championships
Commonwealth Games 2014 host Glasgow is among the cities in the frame to stage the 2019 European Athletics Indoor Championships.
The Scottish city will compete against Apeldoorn (Netherlands), Minsk (Belarus) and Torun (Poland) after they all successfully filed their bidding documents by the set deadline.
Evaluation site visits will take place in each destination during February and March before the Evaluation Commission – consisting of chair Karel Pilny, Celia Mendes, Marcel Wakim and Bernadette Brun – files a report to the European Athletics Council.
The Council will then vote on which city will host the championships on 23 April, during its meeting in Amsterdam following presentations by bidders which have made it through the evaluation process.
Glasgow is the only bidding city to have held the event previously, in 1990. The last time the championships were in the Netherlands was in The Hague in 1989. Poland last held them in 1975 in the city of Katowice, but for Belarus, a winning bid would represent the first time the country has hosted the championship.
Next year’s European Athletics Indoor Championships will take place in Serbian capital Belgrade.
