US-based health club operator LA Fitness has completed its acquisition of 171 Bally Total Fitness clubs in North America.

The deal, believed to be worth around US$153m (117m euro, £98m) includes Bally-operated clubs in 16 states, including 40 in Southern California.

Following the deal, Chicago-based Bally will see the number of its clubs in the US fall from 271 to 100. The remaining Bally-owned clubs will continue to be operated by Bally under the Bally name.

At its peak, Bally operated more than 400 fitness centers in the US, Mexico, Canada, China and the Caribbean. It has, however, struggled in recent years and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2007.
