London Mayor Ken Livingstone has approved developer Quintain’s planning application for the £1.3bn regeneration of the 42-acre site adjacent to Wembley National Stadium.

The regeneration plans include 160,000sq ft of leisure facilities including a cinema complex; a 420-room, five- star hotel and 82,000sq ft of community space. It will also feature bars and restaurants and a number of designer and sports shops.

Although Livingstone has granted his final approval to the scheme, Quintain must now await the outcome of a decision from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, through the Government Office for London.

Provided this is forthcoming, the developer but should be on track to start constuction work this autumn so that the first new areas will be ready in time for the opening of the new National Stadium.

Livingstone added: “These plans will help regenerate Wembley Town Centre and provide an appropriate setting for the landmark new National Stadium. For a site of such importance, it is not only in Wembley’s interests, but in London’s and the interests of the wider UK that this development is taken forward.”

As well as the Wembley project, Quintain is also the developer for the Meridian Delta consortium which is behind the £100m redevelopment of the Millennium Dome site and Greenwich Peninsular.

The scheme received planning permission in February this year and includes the creation of a 26,000-capacity music and sports venue inside the Dome; with an adjacent waterfront sports, leisure, entertainment and retail complex as well as 10,000 new homes, a hotel and schools.
