London hotels drive regeneration
Visit London has announced that hotel development is helping to drive the regeneration of the capital.
Speaking at the annual Sleep: European Hotel Design Event, the tourism organisation’s commercial director, David Hornby, said: “There are 15 major mixed-use developments in London that have significant hotel elements. These schemes are valued at over £25bn and will add more than 6,000 hotel rooms to London’s current stock of around 100,000.
“The largest developments at Stratford and King’s Cross will involve the construction of at least eight hotels and are some of the biggest regeneration projects in Europe.”
According to Hornby, hotel schemes are being built alongside major transport improvements and infrastructure changes, making “London the number one city destination for international travel, with 2006 a record year for overseas visitors and hotels experiencing their strongest performance levels since the late 1990s.”
According to the company’s latest London Hotel Development Monitor, the city is set for a period of sustained growth in new hotel development, while “creativity and imagination in hotel designs are a crucial component in differentiating London as a leading global city”.
