MPs question Welsh Olympic benefits
A parliamentary select committee has expressed concern at the uncertainty that still remains over how Wales will benefit from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
According to a new report from the Welsh Affairs committee, MPs concluded that Wales could lose out on an estimated £100m Lottery funding as a result of the London Games, which could have a long-term effect on grassroots projects. The committee also said that it was concerned with the failure of Olympic organisers to consider staging mountain bike and canoeing events at existing purpose-built facilities in Neath Port Talbot and Cardiff respectively.
However, some Olympic football matches have already been scheduled to take place at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, while both the Australian and New Zealand paralympic teams have confirmed that they will base themselves in Wales ahead of the London Games. Hywel Francis, chair of the committee and MP for Aberavon, said: "There is huge potential for Wales to make a significant contribution to the 2012 Games, in particular its development and promotion of disability sports.
"We hope DCMS, the Wales Office and the Welsh Assembly Government will work together to ensure that Wales is given ample opportunity to reap both the cultural and economic benefits which the Games can bring."
