The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has announced nearly £50,000 to help young volunteers in Birmingham and Sandwell research the impact of African footballers in British football.

Centre Spot, an organisation that uses sport and physical activity to engage with youngsters from deprived backgrounds, is leading the scheme, which will lead to a touring exhibition.

The project will use print, photographic and film archive research carried out at the Premier League archive and National Football Museum, as well as interviews with players and fans.

Centre Spot director Emmanuel Abbeyquaye said: "These ambassadors have distinguished themselves both on and off the pitch and become role models for many young people."
