Mixed reaction to 2012 equestrian course designer

31 Oct 2006

The London 2012 organising committee (LOCOG) has announced that Sue Benson will design the equestrian cross country course at Greenwich Park, but concerns have been voiced over her suitability for the role.

Benson was selected from a shortlist of recommended course designers supplied by the International Equestrian Federation, which included German Rüdiger Schwarz and France's Pierre Michelet, but riders have expressed concerns that she may not have enough experience at the highest level.

Debbie Jevans, director of sport at LOCOG, said: "She has an excellent track record in design at the highest level, and international experience.

"Her ideas for design will incorporate all aspects of Greenwich Park, and will utilise its iconic buildings and views. She also has experience of designing a course in a public area as opposed to a private estate."

Riders have expressed views that other shortlisted candidates were better placed, however. Speaking to Horse & Hound, Clayton Fredericks, of the Event Riders Association, said: "Considering the calibre of the other candidates, I don't believe they've made the best decision. If you look at who has made consistently good courses, the choice is obvious."

Benson is the course designer for Bramham International in Yorkshire, which received criticism this year. She is also working on the design for the 2007 Pan American Games course in Rio de Janeiro.
