Morecambe FC stadium opening delayed
Morecambe Football Club (MFC) has cancelled three pre-season friendly fixtures after the opening of its new Globe Arena venue was delayed until early August.
Delays in the final stages of construction at the £12m venue, which will be capable of accommodating 6,000 spectators, now means the handover of the stadium has been put back to 6 August. The Globe Arena has been developed on a 5.3-hectare (13-acre) site in the town's Westgate area by Warrington-based Globe Construction, which has signed a five-year sponsorship deal with the League Two club.
Brian Fagan, the MFC director overseeing the construction process, said: "This project represents the biggest leisure and hospitality construction programme seen in Morecambe for a generation and it has understandably been a significant challenge to all involved.
"Our apologies go to everyone who has been planning for the friendly games and we know that there will be huge disappointment that we cannot now stage them." An opening weekend scheduled for 24-25 July has also been postponed, with a date for the official opening ceremony to be confirmed.
