Morecambe initiative nets HLF funding
Improvement work is set to be carried out on a number of historic buildings in Morecambe, Lancashire, after the local authority received a £923,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
Lancaster City Council (LCC) has been awarded the funding for a second Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) in Morecambe, which aims to restore some of the resort's art deco and Victorian properties, as well as the spaces surrounding them. Provided the council can now obtain match funding for the 'Morecambe THI 2: A View for Eric' scheme, work is expected to get underway later this year in a bid to upgrade the area around the statue of Eric Morecambe and to complement the views of Morecambe Bay.
Sara Hilton, head of HLF North West, said: "We know that these sorts of regeneration schemes can really boost local economies, not only by improving how places look, but also by prompting business start-ups and creating new jobs. "This further investment by the HLF is helping to ensure that Morecambe is a place that people are once again proud to live in and visit."
The work will follow on from the first Morecambe THI, which included the restoration of the Midland Hotel, Mona House and nearly 70 other residential and commercial properties in Poulton.
