Multi-sports facility opens in Birtley
Birtley Young People's Club, a new £1.2m multi-sports venue near Washington, north east England, which received more than £573,000 of National Lottery funding, has opened.
The complex, which includes facilities for boxing, judo and football, was handed the cash as part of Sport England's Iconic Facilities fund to establish a legacy from the 2012 Games.
Two gyms; three boxing rings; two junior grass pitches; and office and classroom space are on offer at the new centre, in addition to an education/conference room.
Built by Whelan Construction, the facility was also financed by Gateshead Council; the Amateur Boxing Association of England; and the Football Foundation among others.
Ron Rowe, the club's secretary and head senior coach, said: "The club aims to provide both a venue and an opportunity to enable children of all ages and from a diverse range of backgrounds to stay healthy and fit and socialise in a safe environment."
