New sports centre for South Leicestershire
Work has commenced on the construction for Harborough District Council of a new 3,950sq m wet and dry sports centre in the centre of Lutterworth.
The centre will contain a 25m six-lane swimming pool, featuring a submersible boom and half-pool moveable floor to permit both very shallow depths for parent and toddler sessions and depths down to 3m for sub-aqua sessions.
Other facilities include a semi-sprung, four badminton court sports hall; 60-station fitness suite; multi-purpose hall with Gerflor Taraflex sports flooring; café/bistro and a créche.
Management of the site will be by Serco Leisure – which also runs the existing Harborough Leisure Centre in Market Harborough – under a 15-year contract.
Chris Holliday, Harborough District Council leisure services manager and project manager for the scheme, said: "The local community in the Lutterworth and surrounding area will derive great benefit from this project and we are grateful to Sport England and our other partners for helping in finally delivering the scheme."
The project is a partnership scheme between Harborough District Council, the Sport England lottery fund, Lutterworth Town Council, South Leicestershire Primary Care Trust, Lutterworth Grammar School & Community College, Leicestershire County Council, various parish councils and the North Kilworth Challenge.
