Newham Council to propose stadium deal
Newham Council has voted in favour of approaching the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) with an offer of public-public ownership of the London's Olympic Stadium.
The local authority is prepared to invest up to £40m under the planned partnership in a bid to secure benefits for the local community, subject to an "appropriate" return.
Meanwhile, Newham Council also revealed that it would play no role in selecting an anchor tenant for the venue in order to reduce the risk of delay in any future procurement process.
A council spokesperson said: "The meaningful future use of the Olympic Stadium is crucial in securing a lasting legacy for our residents after the 2012 Games.
"Our vision for the Olympic Stadium remains to create significant community benefits including job creation, increased sports participation and the establishment of a major visitor attraction."
Newham Council had partnered with West Ham United Football Club on its successful bid for the Olympic Stadium following the 2012 Games, which collapsed in October.
