Northern Irish government plans revealed

By Pete Hayman    22 Nov 2011

The development of new sports venues and increased visitor numbers have been included as part of the Northern Ireland Executive's new draft Programme for Government 2011-15.

A consultation has now commenced in order to gather views from members of the public on the document, which will shape the executive's priorities over the coming four years.

One of the measures is the development of sports stadiums as agreed with the Irish Football Association; the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA); and Ulster Rugby.

The hosting of a "significant international golf tournament" and the support of 200 projects through the Creative Industries Innovation Fund

Elsewhere, the Northern Ireland Executive is looking to grow visitor numbers to 3.6 million and tourism expenditure to £625m by 2013, with targets to 2020 to be reviewed in 2014.

Northern Ireland culture and arts minister Carál Ní Chuilín said: "These cultural and sporting offerings together with our support for and commitment to local minority languages will make us stand out as the "must do" cultural tourism destination.

"Together with growing our creative industries we can establish our region as a global hub for creativity and innovation. This will bring real benefits to us all and help us chart our way through turbulent times."
