Olympic Park delivery programme launched with stadium brief
The delivery programme for the Olympic Park has been unveiled, along with the publication of the initial brief for the Olympic stadium.
The timetable for delivery of the venues and facilities for the 2012 Olympics has been slightly revised from the outline version, published in 2004. Some facilities, which had been scheduled for completion in 2010, will now be completed in 2011.
David Higgins, chief executive of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) said: "It is a timetable that is challenging but achievable and one that will require a relentless focus on delivery, timely decision-making and sound project management over the next six years."
He added, "Some dates have moved. This reflects our ongoing detailed planning and project management. It makes little sense to have venues completed and vacant for several years before the Games when people cannot use them, as there will be no access to the Olympic Park construction site and additional maintenance costs would be incurred."
The brief for the Olympic stadium has also been released, specifying a "spectacular" 80,000-seat venue, which will host athletics events and the opening and closing ceremonies. After the Games, the stadium will reduce in capacity and is to host athletics events, with the potential for other cultural and community events.
This appears to scupper the plans of several London football clubs which had been linked with a possible move into the stadium. West Ham and Tottenham had both indicated interest in the possibility of occupying the venue post-Games, but will not want a home with an athletics track. Construction work on the stadium is due to commence in the summer of 2008, for completion in the summer of 2011.
