Potential 2012 training sites chosen
The potential training venues for the 2012 Olympic Games have been selected by the London Organising Committee.
More than 600 facilities will appear in the list, which will be published at the Beijing Games this summer and circulated to all National Olympic Committees and National Paralympic Committees.
These organisations will then decide where they base themselves or where they would like to send individual athletes to prepare and acclimatise for the 2012 Games.
The London Organising Committee will offer £25,000 to organisations who choose to train in the UK.
Sebastian Coe, chair of the committee, said: “We said that we wanted the London Games to be for athletes and the facilities listed in this guide will help overseas athletes prepare well.
“The process we have been through shows a great spread of high quality facilities throughout the UK that can be used by elite level athletes.”
Just over a third of the facilities are in London and the south-east – with venues including the Twickenham and Crystal Palace – and the area with the second largest number of facilities was the north-west.
The committee will team up with VisitBritain to develop a new website showcasing the various facilities to help the teams decide where to train.
