Preston North End receives winding up order

By Pete Hayman    17 May 2010

Preston North End Football Club (PNEFC) has confirmed that it has been handed a winding up petition from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

The club revealed that HMRC had launched legal proceedings over a failure to pay PAYE and National Insurance liabilities for April, with the board now set to mull possible financing options. Trading in PNEFC shares on the alternative investment market (AIM) have now been suspended while the club looks to clarify its financial position over the coming days.

PNEFC finance director Kevin Abbott said: "The board of the club face a challenging economic climate and are disappointed that HMRC have taken this action in respect of a debt which is around 20 days overdue." Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday Football Club (SWFC) - recently relegated from the Coca-Cola Championship - has announced that chair Lee Stafford has resigned from his post.

Howard Wilkinson has taken over as interim chair until 7 August in the wake of Stafford's departure, which comes days after SWFC said it had rejected an investment offer from Club 9 Sports. A potential deal had been agreed in principle in March, but the club said Club 9 Sports had submitted a revised proposal that would see a lower amount invested.

Forest Green Rovers Football Club (FGRFC) has been revealed as the unnamed club which was announced as having been put up for sale in a Financial Times advertisement. According to the BBC, a club source confirmed that FGRFC was the club, which recently set a target of raising £250,000 through a share issue by the end of June.

Elsewhere, Northwich Victoria Football Club (NVFC) will compete in the Northern Premier League next season after the club was told it was removed from the Blue Square North. According to the Northwich Guardian, the club has taken too long to come out of administration and are no longer considered "eligible for membership" under league rules.

Wigan Athletic Football Club (WAFC) has confirmed that Jonathan Jackson has been appointed chief executive officer, following Brenda Spencer's decision to retire.
