Public support for Pontypridd lido plans
The planned multi-million pound transformation of the Grade II-listed lido in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, Pontypridd, has received the backing of the town's residents.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council (RCT) has already secured a first round pass from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) towards the Capita Symonds-designed proposals for Ynysangharad Park Lido, which shut in 1991.
The local authority is working on a "viable and sustainable" project that could bring the lido back into public use, and is now due to submit its Stage Two application to the HLF.
Ynysangharad Park Lido first opened in 1927 and its original features include buildings that surround the pool perimeter, which house changing cubicles among other facilities.
The council's plans for the site include a heated 25m main pool; an activity pool; and a splash pool, as well as a park café and a historic interpretation centre.
RCT cabinet member for economic development and safer communities Paul Cannon said: "Many elements of the original form of the lido still exist and provide the potential to restore this ageing facility into a working pool, community facility and regional attraction."
