The Queen has planted the first of more than 4,000 trees at London's Olympic Park as part of a visit to see the progress being made on the 2012 venues and infrastructure.

In addition to helping to launch the Olympic Park's tree planting scheme, the Queen viewed the Olympic Stadium from an elevated platform at the height of the highest spectator seating before walking along a section of the 100m track. It was the first time the Queen visited the Olympic Park since London was awarded the Games in 2005, accompanied by Olympics minister Tessa Jowell, London mayor Boris Johnson and 2012 organisers.

Johnson said: "This is yet another significant milestone on the road to the London 2012 Games. The Olympic Park will be the largest urban park created in Europe for more than 150 years and it is right and proper that the first tree should be planted by Her Majesty The Queen."
