RYA unveils Portland plans
The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has unveiled plans for a new hub of performance sailing in Portland, Dorset.
The new multi-purpose Portland House centre will provide accommodation and conference facilities at one of the main training and event locations for sailing in Britain. It is also hoped that the centre will give British sailors a competitive advantage in the lead up to the 2012 London Olympics, although the centre will not be restricted to elite performers. Class associations, RYA members and affiliated clubs will also have access to the facility.
RYA performance director, John Derbyshire, said: "Previous games have shown that having a bespoke base has been a significant factor in team morale and performance, and for those involved in the Olympic programme it is strongly believed that having a secure base is one of the cornerstones of medal results success." Rod Carr, RYA chief executive, added: "We see this venture as a great opportunity for the RYA to be instrumental in providing a performance advantage for our potential Olympic sailors on home ground in 2012, and to provide excellent facilities that will offer a lasting legacy for sailing in the UK."
The new Portland House is expected to be completed by September 2009.
