Rotherham United Football Club (RUFC) has submitted outline plans for the construction of a new 12,000-seat stadium at the Guest and Chrimes site to the local authority.

The npower League Two club currently plays its home games at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield after leaving Millmoor in 2008. However, the club is now eyeing up a return to the South Yorkshire town. Rotherham Metropolitan District Council (RMBC) will now determine the fate of the planning application, which includes an environmental impact assessment and initial indications as to the stadium's appearance.

It is hoped that RMBC will consider the club's proposals in the autumn in order to enable the next stage of the planning process to get underway, including the development of more detailed designs. RUFC chair Tony Stewart said: "We are convinced that the site at the old Guest and Chrimes foundry is the perfect location for our new stadium. The site ticks all the relevant boxes and I am very excited to put forward the plans that have taken months of hard work and effort to put together.

"We still have work to do but we are moving closer and closer to having something very special that not only can the whole town be proud of, it will also benefit the wider community too."
