Rugby month nets £36m for Scotland
Event Scotland has announced that three major rugby events staged at the Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh, during May contributed £36m to the Scottish economy.
Murrayfield Stadium - the home of Scottish rugby - generated a total of £129.9m for the national economy during the 2008-09 season, which has benefited hoteliers, restaurants and other tourism businesses. Paul Bush, Event Scotland chief operating officer, said: "The month of May was an exceptional month for the capital and for rugby as the city welcomed tens of thousands of rugby fans to enjoy the action of not one but three world class rugby events.
"The economic impact of £36m generated by these three major rugby events is a phenomenal figure and the tangible benefits felt over the month of May by hoteliers, restaurants and businesses which rely upon the tourist trade were a reflection of this impressive figure." Murrayfield Stadium hosted the Heineken Cup final, the Emirates Airline Edinburgh Sevens Festival and the Super League Magic Weekend.
