Taronga Zoo to build A$30m educational facility
Taronga Zoo, near Sydney, Australia, has received planning approval for a new science and conservation education centre.
The A$30.7m (US$23.5, €20.8, £17.8m) Taronga Institute of Science and Learning (TISL) has been designed by New South Wales architecture firm NBRS. The old learning facility will be replaced by the new three-storey design, which is inspired by patterns in nature and will offer an immersive and interactive experience.
NSW Department of Planning and Environment gave the project – which is part of the zoo’s Centenary Revitalisation Plan – the green light earlier in August.
“The Institute will enable Taronga to expand on its strengths in science and education, increase the zoo’s ability to undertake leading research and inspire individuals and communities to secure a future for wildlife,” said local environment minister Mark Speakman.
Part funded by the government, TISL will serve researchers, students and members of the public and be equipped with state-of-the-art technology labs and classrooms.
Construction is scheduled to begin in October with completion slated for 2018.
