Scunthorpe United Football Club (SUFC) is not giving up on its plans to move to a new stadium.

At an AGM held this week, SUFC chair Steve Wharton refused to rule out the possibility of moving from its current 9,000-capacity Glanford Park ground.

“I believe the possibility of a new stadium is growing and after a month or two we’ll have a much better idea of how things are progressing,” he said.

The club has for long planned a move from Glanford Park due to the stadium’s ageing facilities, but has so far struggled to gather the funds needed.

Wharton ruled out the possibility of funding the move through a loan facility and is eager to pursue a partnership with existing mixed-use schemes and would also be prepared to involve the local government.

“I wouldn’t advocate we move to a new stadium with any substantial debt. We are talking to developers on a major scheme that would help fund the football side of the plans,” he said.

“We’ve also had a meeting with North Lincolnshire Council and their main strategic development partners.”

Wharton said that if the new stadium didn’t go ahead, then the club would be forced to look into developing Glanford Park.
