Shortlist of Olympic facility contractors announced

By Caroline Wilkinson    16 Sep 2008

The London Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has announced the five shortlisted contractors for both the White Water Canoe Centre in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, and the Handball Arena in Hackney, London.

The White Water Canoe Centre, host of the canoe and kayak slalom events at the 2012 London Games, will also be used as a post-Games legacy facility for white-water rafting and canoeing.

The 12,000-seat facility is being built on the edge of the 1,000-acre Lee Valley Regional Park, 30km north of the Olympic Village and is directly linked to the Olympic Park by the River Lea. There will be a 300m canoeing competition course and a 100m warm-up course.

The shortlisted contractors include Edmund Nuttal, Fitzpatrick Contractors, Carillion Construction, Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering and Morrision Construction.

When complete, the facility will be owned and managed by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, which has been working closely with Sport England, the ODA and architects FaulkerBrowns to finalise the designs.

The canoe course will be located within artificial parkland designed by landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. The white-water course, which will be constructed from a new body of water and a system of pumps, is being designed by Whitewater Parks International in collaboration with civil and structural engineers Cundall.

The second legacy facility to have its contractors shortlisted is the Handball Arena minutes away from the Olympic Village in East London.

The venue, designed by Make Architects, PTW and Ove Arup and Partners, will host handball and the modern pentathlete aspects of fencing and shooting as well as goalball during the Paralympic Games. A planning application is due to be submitted this month.

The shortlisted contractors for the arena include Barr, Buckingham Group, Byrne Group, Mansell Construction Services and Verry Construction.

After the Games the facility will be converted into a multi-use sports arena with retractable seating to cater for indoor sports including basketball, handball, badminton and gymnastics.

Olympic Delivery Authority chief executive David Higgins said: "This is a quality shortlist for one of the last remaining opportunities to build a permanent Olympic Park venue. The Handball Arena is an important venue both for spectators and athletes during the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the local community and sports teams in legacy."

Jules Pipe, mayor of Hackney, said: "The facility will contribute to the council's continuing investment into healthier lifestyles. We are working with the ODA and partners to ensure the venue is developed with the long-term legacy as a priority."

A decision on both contractors is expected to be made spring 2009 ready for work to begin on the sites in the Summer.
