South Africa to host IPL tournament
South Africa has been confirmed as the new host nation for this year's Indian Premier League (IPL) following discussions between tournament organisers and Cricket South Africa (CSA).
Now in its second year, the tournament was due to be held in India between 10 April and 24 May but was forced to relocate after security concerns were raised about the event coinciding with Indian government elections between 16 April and 13 May. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had expressed an interest in hosting the tournament, buy the likelihood of poor weather conditions in England and the practicalities of staging games at suitable times for Indian prime time audiences led to South Africa being the only viable candidate.
CSA chief executive Gerald Majola said: "The organisers can be assured that they have the full support of our CSA's structures and the South African public to stage a successful tournament. This event will strengthen the ties even further between South African and Indian cricket. "We are looking forward to hosting some of the world's best cricketers and we can assure them they will be provided with the very best facilities to show their skills."
The tournament will now be staged between 18 April and 24 May.
