Work has began on the 5,000sq ft (465sq m) space with the official opening set for May.
Along with a schedule of music, comedy and theatre performances, SDAC will also host a range of classes and workshops.
SDAC chair David Parsley said: “Not only are we going to create a wonderful creative space for both young and old to enjoy, we are also going to provide some much needed jobs to local people.”
