Ole Scheeren and Andre Fu join forces for Andaz Singapore hotel
Hospitality brand Andaz has opened its first hotel in Southeast Asia, the Andaz Singapore.
Located within DUO – a large integrated development spread across two sculptural towers in the Ophir-Rochor district – the hotel features 342 contemporary guestrooms, including 26 suites, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing views of the city-state.
German architect Ole Scheeren designed the concave skyscrapers, which are 186 and 170m high and clad in a latticework of hexagonal windows. He has said his aim was to create “a civic nucleus symbiotically inscribed within the city”.
Interior designer Andre Fu created the hotel’s colourful interiors, which “further Andaz’s mission to create inspiring, indigenous experiences that immerse guests in the local culture of each unique destination.”
Fu observed the hotel’s dynamic location and sprawling, dense neighbourhood and was inspired to form “a dreamscape of passageways” that incorporate subtle, locally inspired techniques, decorative details, furniture, art and fabric into the design.
Brazilian sculptor André Mendes, Singaporean artist Ahmad Abu Bakar, New York-based Filipina artist Monica Delgado and Malaysian artist Fauzulyusri Mohd Yusof also have work on display throughout the hotel.
Facilities include Alley on 25 – seven alleyway ‘shop houses’ on one floor that bring Singapore street-dining to guests. There is also a 14,800sq ft (1,375sq m) events alleyway featuring The Glasshouse, a distinct ‘glass-box’ venue; Garden Studio, which has an adjoining outdoor terrace; and two Studios available for smaller gatherings.
“We are extremely excited to open Andaz Singapore and to bring the inspirational and creative Andaz brand to Southeast Asia,” said general manager Olivier Lenoir. “By bringing in the local spirit of our surrounding neighbourhoods and offering fresh perspectives, Andaz Singapore aims to inspire a sense of discovery.”
The hotel marks the seventeenth property for the brand, which is owned by Hyatt.
It has been a busy few months for Scheeren, who has announced major new leisure projects in Vietnam and Germany, and overseen the completion of Thailand’s tallest building: the 314m (1,030ft) tall ‘pixelated’ MahaNakhon skyscraper located in Bangkok’s Central Business District.
