Youth Sports Trust launches Active Camp for physically inactive girls
One-hundred-and-fifty girls who do not take part in regular physical activity will attend a three-day camp of sporting activities set up by the Youth Sport Trust.
Girls Active Camp will be hosted by Loughborough University between 18 and 20 March. Funded by Sport England, the camp is designed to create a network of girls who are inspired to take part in more sport and physical activity, and develop leadership skills to encourage their peers to become active.
A range of workshops will be held, as well as team building exercises and sporting activities including dodgeball, badminton, fencing and street dance. The camp is being delivered in partnership with equality body Women in Sport and Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign.
“Getting more girls into sport and physical activity at an early age has the potential to create a fitter, healthier and fairer society for all,” said Youth Sport Trust chief executive Ali Oliver. “These young women will be encouraged and challenged to explore key qualities and skills that will help them on their personal journey.”
Sport England director of community sport Mike Diaper said Girls Active Camp was “an important way of reaching out” to teenage girls who “don’t find the traditional sports offer attractive”, while Women in Sport chief executive Ruth Holdaway added the initiative would get young girls engaged with topics around leadership and participation.
