David Geffen donates US$100m for MoMA expansion
Entertainment mogul David Geffen has donated US$100m (€89m, £69.5m) to New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the largest donation yet to MoMA’s funding campaign for its large-scale expansion.
MoMA unveiled revised US$445m (€407.3m, £310.6m) plans to redevelop and expand the facility in January, with the design by Diller Scofidio + Renfro streamlining the museum experience to work better for both visitors and curators.
Geffen – who has a net worth of US$6.5bn (€5.7bn, £4.5bn) – has matched a donation he made to fund Thomas Heatherwick's renovation of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, which has since been renamed after him.
The MoMA expansion will add 50,000sq ft (4,645sq m) of gallery space while also improving flow through the museum. Expected to be completed by 2020, some grander elements including a moving floor, retractable glass wall and new entrance to its sculpture garden have been dropped following criticism.
New plans include more varied gallery spaces, a larger and less-congested lobby and a faster coat check-in line. The museum’s on-site retail shop will also move from street level to below ground to make room for the lobby expansion, though a cut-away ceiling will mean the space will still be viewable from the street. A second retail space will also be built adjacent to the second-floor café.
In recognition of Geffen’s gift, three floors of new galleries will be named The David Geffen Wing. In addition, the fourth-floor suite of galleries in the current museum building will be named The David Geffen Galleries.
