Sports Club Survey launched to study grassroots sport following Olympic year

By Aoife Dowling    23 Apr 2013

The Sport and Recreation Alliance has launched a survey to examine how grassroots sports clubs are faring in the wake of the 2012 Games.

The 2013 Sports Club Survey aims to get thousands of sports clubs from all over the country responding to the survey, which covers a range of issues from the Olympic legacy and disability sport, to local authorities and school links.

At the end of 2012, the Alliance's Olympic and Paralympic legacy snapshot survey revealed that more could be done to help sports clubs drive up grassroots participation.

The survey showed that two in five clubs (42 per cent) are experiencing an increase in the number of people joining their club since the Games but a quarter (26 per cent) of these clubs are struggling to meet this demand.

It also found that a lack of funding that is preventing three in five sports clubs (60 per cent) from growing their membership. Increased operational costs are holding back the growth of 54 per cent of sports clubs and half are struggling with a lack of affordable venues or facilities.

The new Sport and Recreation Alliance survey will investigate what opportunities, challenges and barriers sports clubs are facing; how clubs are coping financially; if clubs are affected by local authority cuts; and what training and support clubs would like to see offered by non-profit organisations to clubs in the future.

The Sports Club Survey can be answered between April and June this year, and results will be revealed in October.
