Western Australia's (WA) state government has announced that it has increased the budget for the first phase of redevelopment work to be carried out at Perth's nib Stadium.

Stage one of the scheme will now incorporate corporate facilities - including 56 open boxes seating 420 people; a 250-person BBQ terrace; LED signage; and a second video screen. WA sport and recreation minister Terry Waldron has confirmed that the additional facilities will see the project's budget increase to AU$95.1m (£60m, EUR68.4m, US$97m).

The 'end vision' for the redevelopment of the nib stadium - home to Western Force rugby team and Perth Glory football club - is a 25,000-capacity venue, with work to start in 2012. A new permanent Eastern Stand with capacity for around 10,000 spectators; food/beverage outlets; toilet facilities; and more than 50 wheelchair spaces forms part of the first phase.

Waldron said: "The initial proposed scope of works, while benefitting spectators and members attending nib, provided minimal revenue-generating opportunities for the sports. "This decision highlights the value of effective stakeholder consultation in informing project definition."
