Study: Football supporters to 'cut back'

By Pete Hayman    19 May 2011

New research published by Virgin Money has found that 13 per cent of football supporters who hold season tickets at their clubs are not planning to renew them next season.

The report - part of Virgin Money's Football Fans' Inflation Index - also revealed that 18 per cent of those who regularly buy matchday tickets are planning to "cut back". It comes as the index showed that the average matchday cost of attending a game has grown to more than £101 - compared with less than £85 for the same period in 2010.

Nearly a third of supporters who regularly buy tickets to Premier League games are looking to cut back next season, although the figure varies dependent on the club. Virgin Money spokesperson Grant Bather said: "Average attendances in the Premier League remain high with clubs regularly selling the ground out, but there are signs of empty spaces at many games.

"In the lower leagues it's the same story and it is clear that the rising cost of going to games is having a major effect."
