Carlisle Leisure Limited (CCL) is set to reopen Swifts Golf Course and its driving range following the January floods which devastated much of central Carlisle, and flooded CCL’s twin golf courses.

Stony Holme, CCL’s other golf course, reopened two months after the flooding, but has only nine holes open and operates out of a temporary structure, the clubhouse and shop having been destroyed.

The flooding was caused by gale force winds and torrential rainfall, which hit Carlisle overnight on 7 January, overflowing all the local rivers.

Another of CCL’s properties affected by the flood was The Sheepmount Athletic Stadium, which was being refurbished at a cost of £3.5m.

The existing six-lane track was being removed and replaced by an eight-lane track, which would enable the hosting of National League competitions. Work to a grandstand area and a rebuilding of the indoor areas, to create a new gym and training rooms, were also in progress.

However, the flood ruined the new track and destroyed a recently-placed roof.

Originally due for completion by March 2005, the new facilities are now expected to open in September.

CLL has currently claimed in excess of £500,000 on insurance to cover the damage and business interruption.
