Liverpool athletics centre to get £500k Sport England boost
Sport England and England Athletics are set to pump £465,500 (US$605,585, €537,636) into the refurbishment of Wavertree Athletics Centre outdoor running track.
Councillors at Liverpool City Council will decide on Friday at a cabinet meeting whether to accept grants of £400,000 (US$520,933, €461,986) from Sport England and £65,000 (US$84,651, €75,072) from England Athletics for the revamp. The current eight-lane track is more than 25 years old and needs replacing.
The centre is home to Liverpool Harriers and Athletics Club and is where British Olympic heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson trains. She finished sixth in the Women’s Heptathlon in Rio 2016.
Wavertree Athletics Centre has also been earmarked as one of the potential venues if Liverpool wins its bid for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
If the plans get the go-ahead work to the track is expected to start in September or October.
In March, Sport England awarded the Liverpool authority more than £145,000 (US$188,909, €167,459) to refurbish the indoor track at the centre.
