DC United wins US$25m funding to make new stadium eco-friendly

By Matthew Campelli    28 Jun 2017
The stadium has been designed by Populous

Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise DC United has secured a US$25m (£19.3m, €22m) funding package to make its soon-to-be-built new stadium more energy efficient.

The package has been agreed with the mayor of Washington DC Muriel Bowser and the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE).

Funding will go towards the installation of energy efficient equipment at the 20,000-capacity Audi Field venue, such as 884kw solar panels and stormwater retention system.

High-efficiency heating and cooling systems, LED field lighting, additional building insulation and a green roof will also be implemented with the money.

The plans will help Audi Field achieve LEED Gold certification from the United States Green Building Council and save around US$125,000 (£96,578, €109,970) annually on utility bills.

In addition, the measures will result in a 25 per cent reduction in energy use and will cut emissions by 820 metric tonnes of CO2 annually.

The reductions will help the city achieve its overall sustainability goals, which include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent, increasing the use of renewable energy by 50 per cent and cutting energy use by 50 per cent, all by 2032.

“We know that cities throughout the US will be leading the fight against climate change, and this deal is an example of how Washington DC can think globally while acting locally,” said Bowser.

“This deal will not only allow us to green Audi Field, it will also create new opportunities for local businesses and high-quality green jobs.”
