Torbay to get velodrome as British Cycling invest in Olympic legacy
Torbay is soon to benefit from British Cycling’s legacy plans to get millions more people cycling, through improved infrastructure and facilities.
The governing body is looking to establish a network of cycling facilities in every region of the UK and the south west has been identified as the most important national priority area for new facilities. Torbay as the best place to host them.
Plans for the town include an outdoor velodrome and closed road circuit and Torbay Council is currently carrying out a public consultation to establish the best place for the facilities.
British Cycling is providing 50 per cent of the funding and Torbay Council has agreed to match the remaining 50 per cent, around £800,000.
Earlier this month, British Cycling appointed its first infrastructure expert to act as a consultant on how to design cycle friendly cities. Transport consultant, Adrian Lord, will be advising the organisation on cycle-proofing road layouts, junctions and route design.
