The great storm – 20 years on

By Tim Nash    18 Oct 2007

Twenty years ago this week, a well known weather forecaster made the mistake that shaped his life and, the south east of England sustained the fiercest storms on record, with winds at 100 miles per hour.

One hundred and fifty thousand trees were felled – as if matches – roads were blocked, one ferry was tossed like a pebble onto the shore.

The devastating effect of the unpredicatable weather changed the landscape overnight. Great swathes of forest were flattened; horizons never previously seen were available to the eye. Six of the seven oaks which gave the town of Sevenoaks its name were flattened. Roads were made impassable; but the loss of life could have been so much higher if the storm had struck in daylight.

Two decades on, much has been learned and areas affected are doing well. There is improved wildlife, with more than 50 acres across the south east left exactly as the trees lay. More volunteer tree wardens came forward. A comprehensive tree strategy was implemented. Storing the wood was a massive exercise but new stores were created so that much has been preserved for the future. Foresters now operate differently, aided by new computer systems offering for example better forecasting.

Among the many good lessons learned, through this experience, was the value of training. For example, the hectic and enhanced usage of chainsaws led to injuries for untrained personnel. ISPAL continues to take a lead in driving up the skill of the workforce across the sector. The message is clear - be safe, be sure and be fully trained.

A course for the skills you need, whether safety related or not, could be happening near you - if not, ask us for one!
