Tower Hamlets Council (THC) has agreed to drop legal proceedings against the organisers of the 2012 Games over a decision to re-route the marathon route away from the borough.

It follows an agreement between the authority and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) to offer more opportunities for the area. A council employee will work with LOCOG's human resources team to identify 1,000 job vacancies that will be made available to local residents 72 hours before the wider market.

Children and young people will also be given the chance to participate in test events and the rehearsal of ceremonies, as well as accessing tickets through the Ticketshare scheme. Tower Hamlets mayor Lutfur Rahman said: "We're 100 per cent behind London 2012, and want to make sure that our residents gain the maximum benefit from the Games.

"They will have to put up with a lot of the disruption that comes with hosting the biggest sporting event of earth, so it's only fair that they get to share in the experience and reap the rewards." Last November, THC said it would seek a judicial review after the borough was removed from the marathon route. This agreement will see the proceedings dropped.
