Dozens of cycling facilities to be built following successful Road World Championships bid

By Matthew Campelli    13 Oct 2016
The recommendations will be presented to Tracey Crouch, who unveiled Sporting Future in December 2015

Twenty-seven grassroots cycling facilities will be developed across the UK following Yorkshire’s successful bid to host the 2019 UCI Road World Cycling Championships.

As reported by Sports Management last month, the government will plough £15m (US$18.2m, €16.6m) to develop the facilities alongside national governing body British Cycling.

That fund is part of a larger £24m (US$29.2m, €26.6m) pot which will also finance the preparations for the event.

UK Sport, the elite sport quango, will invest an additional £3m (US$3.7m, €3.3m) of National Lottery money.

Tracey Crouch, the sports minister, congratulated Yorkshire for “embracing major cycling events” in recent years, following its successful hosting of a Tour de France stage.

“The government is backing the event with investment to stage the championships and leave a legacy that will help strengthen cycling at the grassroots across the country,” she added.

The competition will see 1,000 male and female riders from 75 countries take part, with full road races for under-18, under-23 and elite riders.

“Today marks a moment in history,” said Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire.

“Yorkshire has shown it can host world-class events with the Grand Depart and Tours de Yorkshire,” he added.
