UN: Tourism 'drives' trade and development
Tourism can act as a major catalyst for economic growth and employment in both developed and developing nations, according to delegates attending a United Nations (UN) conference.
The 13th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is taking place in Qatar and looks at how the global economy can spread its benefits "more inclusively".
Participants are also examining how jobs can be created and living standards raised for those living in the poorest nations, with tourism presenting "one of the most promising" options.
According to UNCTAD, tourism is currently growing at a faster pace in developing countries than in developed nations and is a key export sector for some of the least developed economies.
UNCTAD secretary-general Supachai Panitchpakdi said: "It is encouraging to see that the contribution of tourism to development, poverty reduction and economic growth is increasingly recognised.
"This can only be achieved by better policy coherence between and among the various ministries and government departments that provide the enabling environment for tourism to flourish."
