US$5m donation for Marshall University plans
Plans for a new sports medicine translational research centre at Marshall University in West Virginia, US, have received a US$5m (£3.1m) donation from the Cline Family Foundation.
Funding has been matched through the state's 'Bucks for Brains' West Virginia Research Trust Fund, which will see US$10m (£6.1m) go towards the development. The sports medicine translational research centre is set to form part of a US$30m (£18.4m) upgrade of Marshall University's athletic facilities, which includes an indoor practice venue.
Translational sports medicine involves the use of 'basic' science in tissue growth and repair; gene expression; and nanotechnology to address current issues in the field. Marshall University director of athletics Mike Hamrick said: "The foundation's support for a sports medicine research initiative will greatly enhance the profile of our indoor practice facility and help make it possible for us to build a facility that is truly second to none."
