Vienna Museum contest now open
The City of Vienna has announced a two-stage design competition for the expansion and modernisation of the Wien Museum in the Austrian capital.
Designed by the architect Oswald Haerdtl in the 1950s, the Wien Museum is situated on Karlsplatz in the centre of Vienna. The structure has been largely untouched for 30 years, save for a partial renovation in 2000 when the central courtyard was roofed over.
As Vienna’s key municipal museum, a budget of £60m (€83m, $88m) has preliminary been set for the project. The City of Vienna is planning to expand and renovate the site, creating an additional 7,000sq m (75,347sq ft) to add to it’s existing 5000sq m (53,819sq ft) of exhibition space.
Registration for interest in the competition is now open. The organisers hope to name a winner for the project by the end of 2015. Ground is expected to be broken in late 2017, with completion slated for 2020.
