WHUFC owners increase shareholding

By Pete Hayman    26 May 2010

West Ham United Football Club (WHUFC) joint owners David Sullivan and David Gold have confirmed that they have increased their stake in the Premier League club.

In January, Sullivan and Gold both secured a 25 per cent stake to gain overall control of the club in January, but now own a combined 60 per cent club after buying 10 per cent from previous owner CB Holdings. The £8m deal will see both owners increase their respective stake by 5 per cent, with half of the proceeds set to be reinvested into the club. The remaining half will go to CB Holdings.

Sullivan said: "Myself and David Gold are West Ham United fans and our aim is to ensure our club enjoys a stable and successful future. To this end, we have both invested a further £4m to increase our shareholding to 30 per cent each." Meanwhile, former Liverpool Football Club (LFC) owner David Moores has admitted in a letter to The Times newspaper that he "regrets" selling the club to US duo George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

In the letter, Moores said: "Since resigning from the board I have not set foot inside Anfield - and it hurts. I hugely regret selling the club to George Gillett and Tom Hicks. I believe that, at best, they have bitten off much more than they can chew. "I call upon them now to stand back, accept their limitations as joint owners, acknowledge their role in the club's current demise, and stand aside, with dignity, to allow someone else to take up the challenge."

Allerdale Borough Council (ABC) has approved £40,000 funding towards the total cost of installing new floodlights at Workington AFC's Borough Park ground during this summer. Club chair Humphrey Dobie was presented with a cheque by council deputy leader David Wilson at ABC's annual general meeting at The Wave in Maryport on 21 May.

Elsewhere, Livingston Football Club - recently promoted to Scottish League Division Three - has announced that its Almondvale Stadium is to be renamed after striking a deal with Braidwood Motor Company. The 10,000-seat stadium will be called The Braidwood Motor Company Stadium until the end of the 2012-13 season as part of the agreement, which is worth a five-figure sum to the club.
